HypnoBirthing for Everyone

HypnoBirthing is for everyone, not just for those who choose home birth. In fact, we do not advocate home birth only. We support any choice of birth you make: Birthing center, water birth, home birth and even a hospital helped birth. The only thing we do not advocate and do not support is drugged birth, scheduled cesareans and unnecessarily manipulated birthing. We do not support deliberate ignorance and carelessness. We teach you to be comfortable at your birth and be safe, as well as be able to feel the way to WANT to feel, happy, elated, joyful, bonded with your baby and loved ones, orgasmic, loving, light, smiling, or laughing, rather than scared and pained. We help you relieve the fears and concerns before birthing, so you can go into the birthing happy and light and enjoy your time.

When you give birth at home, your feel safer, unrushed, comfortable and supported by your family, than in a hospital facility, where you are pushed to finish up, and agree to measures you don't like, or have no decision privilege. Fact: in 1900s 90% of all births happened at home; in 1955 only 1% of births took place at home. Business of Being Born, a Documentary by Ricki Lake, sites: Hospitals are businesses, beds need to be filled and then emptied, and many women do not have the time to enjoy the birthing process naturally, as it should go on. They are induced, they are sped up, they are made to comply the orders of the hospital, doctors, and the whole business of birthing. Use of Caesarian section is peaking. In the 1970s - only 40%, last decade -70%, since 1996 the case of using caesarian section for birthing had risen to 96%, in 2005 on in every three women had caesarian!

IV or No IV? Stress vs. Relaxation

In a hospital birth, when you arrive, and register, you will be given an IV procedure.

Consider this: Using hypnosis for birth and self-hypnosis to create an experience you want during labor, you may find that it is possible to request an IV-free birth.

The origin of the IV practice comes from the times before epidurals. As with all interventions, an I.V. is necessary when there is medical indication for its use. For example, if a woman is vomiting throughout her labor, she may need the fluids and calories the I.V. provides.

But why would a woman be vomiting?

If a mother is fearful, her body would produce adrenaline.

Production of adrenaline is a ‘fight or flight’ body natural response. When adrenaline is produced, all other normal processes in the body slow down or stop including digestion, and ...... labor, as blood is directed away from "secondary" survival centers, to the parts of the body active in stress response... arms and legs. The processes inside the torso pretty much come to a halt.

Like an animal in danger, why would a threatened woman continue to give birth if the situation is uncertain?

If general anesthesia is administered, or painkiller epidural, one of the ways a mother respond to it is vomit.  In order for the vomit to not get into lungs and cause even more problems, it became a standard procedure to prohibit food and water intake in a hospital birth.  Therefore the I.V. became a way to hydrate and nourish a mother in labor.

Using hypnosis in labor assists general relaxation, conducive visualizations, and deep abdominal breathing. When in relaxation the mother enters into a completely different state of being called 'rest and digest', which is a complete opposite of the fight and flight response of stress.

The relaxed mother's responses are natural. In relaxation she feels at ease and joyful, and there in no space for fear. Each surge is met with a relaxed dee abdominal breath helping her translate her sensations into joy and peaceful anticipation. Her husband is near, and his support makes her calmer.

Instead of fearful and screaming energy, she creates energy that is directed and intentional, helping her baby make their way to the exit, with joy and relaxed readiness to do what it takes to have the birth that she wants.

What Time Of Day Will Your Baby Be Born?

What's your guess, when will your labor begin?

When student moms start their HypnoBirthing class with me, I ask them to use their imagination planning their birth and describe it.  One of the moms described her labor start at 11:30am, on a Saturday. Actually,  her labor began on Saturday morning, but very early in the wee hours.

So what does research show us? Why so many of the family lore includes rushing to the hospital at 3 a.m.?

Chronobiology is a relatively new profession. It studies the human body rhythm throughout life, on a yearly basis, and from month to month, day to day and throughout the day. Part of this study includes the rhythm of our body throughout the day, called circadian rhythm, and even in much smaller increments, throughout the hour, called ultradian rhythm. Without taking you into semantics of the titles let me explain the research showing that spontaneous labor in human starts around and after midnight.

Birth is a body's natural progression, so as soon as mother enters into a safe mode of rest in a safe place, the baby knows it is a good time to come out.  A study in 1979 on labor of more than 200,000 women shows that 20% more babies ar born between 2-6am than between 2-6pm. Later studies involving 2 mil. women support night birthing.

Studies also show the same progression for second and third babies. Additionally, same studies show that on average the length of labor for those starting laboring at night take 2 hours less than those starting labor after dawn.

Speaking of hospital births, be aware, that most artificially induced births happen on a Tuesday, and none on weekends. Doctors schedules usually greatly contribute to this pattern.

Natural births occur more often on Saturday or a Sunday, according to a study in 1997 involving births among the US women.

If you want to know more about your body learn to give yourself positive suggestions. When you are tired, rest, when you are emotional, relax. Relax more often than before pregnancy or more often during the day. Listen to your body and  it will pay you off handsomely during peaceful labor.

Morrin is available for further information and discussion of your personal preparation to your labor.

Are YOU Ready for Birth?

Are you ready?
Or are you still afraid?

Just got back from a HypnoBirthing class I taught tonight. One mom asked today how to get rid of fear of birth. When the time is near, a lot of moms begin to search for what can be helpful in that time.

Contrary to popular belie the things to check for aren't your bag to take to the hospital.

The things to check for are --- YOU !!!

Are YOU ready?

Do you know how to keep yourself calm?
Have you reviewed stages of labor to be aware of what you will feel?
Did you practice your birth breathing?
Are you committed to NOT PUSH but instead breathe your baby out?
Are you committed to drug-free natural birth?

Perhaps you want to check whether your husband is ready?
Ask him, is he ready to support you?
Does he have the tools and awareness to be a conscious parent?
Is he committed to being there for you and your baby?

And wear a button-down shirt to the birth of your baby:)

If you still have time, enroll in the HypnoBirthing class, scheduled or private, or a review of HypnoBirthing techniques, or call Morrin with your questions before the birth.
If not, read the HypnoBirthing book, by Marie Mongan.

If you need private work with a hypnotherapist, hypnosis for natural birth induction, or hypnosis for calm breathing, or hypnotic work for your husband before birth, let me know. I am available at 646-522-5886.

I wish you a very happy Birthing Day!

"Dear Morrin,
...we had our baby girl, , on April 13th! She was born at 6:09 am after about 7 hours of beautiful and easy "labor." I used Hypnobirhting breathing and led me through imagery throughout and I never "pushed." came out just perfect and there was NO BLOOD, NO TEAR, and even NO SWELLING. swam out of me in the birthing tub into 's hands and he brought her right up to my chest. The cord was cut much later and we just sat and marveled at her beauty. Our daughter (3 3/4 yrs) watched the whole thing and even had her hand on my shoulder while emerged. To have this imprint of what birth can be on 's brain brings me so much joy. Having this kind of birth has been a gift for our whole family. Thank you for your instruction and encouragement." Midwife and Doula in HypnoBirthing Birth

What's a Doula?

The word doula comes from the Greek word meaning "woman caregiver."

The word is now used to describe a trained labor companion who provides the woman and her partner continuous emotional support, physical comfort and assistance in obtaining information before, during and just after childbirth.

Labor support consists of helping a woman develop her own rhythms and rituals, providing distractions with breathing patterns, comforting touch, varying positions, use of a birth ball, warm or cold compresses, vocalization, visualization, relaxation, or whatever is needed to provide comfort.

Every birth is a unique experience and she will work with you to modify and vary comfort measures as desired and needed.

Know the difference between a midwife and a doula.
A midwife provides prenatal care, delivery of the baby, care of the mother post-partum and newborn care. The midwife is responsible for the safety of mother and baby. Some kinds of midwives also provide family planning, annual exams, and other kinds of well-woman gynecology.

Certified doulas do not provide any kind of medical care. For instance, they would not listen to the baby's heart beat or do a vaginal exam or deliver the baby. However, a doula is instrumental in providing emotional and physical support for the laboring woman and her family (husband) and/or post-partum care of the mother and baby. Doula care has been shown to improve outcomes for both moms and babies shown through many studies.

doula can specialize in assiting you at just your baby birth, or post-partum (after the baby arrival) care of mother and baby, or both. A birth doula stays with you throughout your labor, no matter how many hours it lasts, and leaves after the baby arrives.

Many doulas know massage techniques, or belly casting (making a cast of your full belly for decoration at home), or know to prepare your placenta after delivery to take as pills to eliminate post-partum symptoms, or prenatal yoga they can show you, HypnoBirthing relaxations, lactation consulting, photography or videography of birthing or after birth, etc. Call up a couple of them to find the one who is available and again, who 'clicks' with you: she will be your hand-maiden in your birth room, and will keep you and your husband comfortable.

The post-partum doulas can stay  with you (a new mom) longer, or come after the baby arrives, for a few hours a day, to clean up, take care of you, teach you to breastfeed the baby, and how to take care of the baby, some will shop and cook for you.

If you choose to want to find a post-partum doula who takes care of you after the birth, please connect with her in advance as well. Doulas' experience is reflected in amount of births she attended and the price she charges.
How to Hire a HypnoBirthing Doula?

A doula can greatly enhance your experience of childbirth and the postpartum. Your HypnoBirthing birth doula will be at your side along with your care provider and partner, as part of your team for continuous support during labor and birth. Or maybe you’d like a postpartum doula to help you through the transition into parenthood and family. Either way, finding a good fit for you and your family is critical.

A doula’s education, training, experience and credentials are important. When doulas have DONA International certification, you know that they have had the best education and training available. You can also be assured that they have a strong sense of professionalism and integrity.

Also important is doula's experience. Many doulas attended hundreds of births and have enormous wealth of knowledge and practical experience. Some have just started. Their pricing will depend greatly on the experience and confidence in assisting you in the birth that you want.

You will also want to consider whether you and your partner feel comfortable with an individual doula. You will need to feel that this doula is supportive of your hopes and expectations about labor, childbirth and parenting, in addition to having a strong professional background and credentials. That is why we recommend the following four-step hiring process when hiring a birth or postpartum HypnoBirthing doula.

Morrin Bass specializes in training hypnoBirthing doulas for moms specific needs. Certification classes are offered at New York Awareness Center.

HypnoBirthing Affirmations for Stages of Labor

Between surges during thinning and opening phase

Assume relaxation, drift away into relaxation
Every muscle limp and at ease; feel the calm and peace
Body limp with total relaxation and peace
Turn your birthing over to your birthing body
Relax and trust your body to know what to do
So calm; so comfortable; so at peace
Mother and her body, working in total harmony

During surges—said softly but with more emphasis and direction

Body totally limp; go with your breathing
Trust your body; long, deep breaths
Fill the balloon; give it a color; fill it higher, higher
Breathe up, up, up; fill that balloon—SLOW breath up
See your soothing color and go deeper into relaxation
Body limp; arms limp; legs limp
Breathe up only from your birthing body
Opening with each new sensation
Body limp; shoulders limp; chest relaxed
Breathe one long breath; work with your baby
Baby and mother working together
Long, slow breath up
Release and relax downward now

During Birth Breathing—lovingly

Breathe love down to your baby
Breathe your loving energy down to the baby
Mother and baby working together to bring this miracle
Clear the path; make it smooth and easy
Follow the lead of your baby and body
Open the path for your baby
Nudge your baby gently down to birthing
See the petals of the blossom opening gently
Body following your baby’s lead
Gently, softly, breathe love down to your baby
Path now open and smooth
Baby slips down and out, easily, smoothly

How To Have Joyful Labor

Those of you who are interested in a calm and peaceful birth listen up!

The new brain research and discoveries open up a whole new realm of what is possible.

There is a definite correlation between peaceful labor, your brain production of oxytocin and your state of mind.

Your peaceful labor depends on your peaceful state of mind which is caused largely by the amount of the neural hormone calle oxytocin. Oxytocin is produced in the brain triggered by the pleasant sensations, thoughts, affirmations, meditation, relaxation, touch, visual or auditory stimulation and in most cases, just deep breathing, that causes our brain to acquire more oxygen streamlining pleasure trance.

The production of oxytocin depends on the polarization of cells producing oxytocin.
The more oxy-gen we have in our body, the more oxy-tocin is produced.
Then the process goes like this:
The positive stimulation through posture or touch, or deep breathing etc., causes the body cells to become more polarized in the cerebellum that causes them to fire action potential in bursts, signaling to hypothalamus, which signals the pitutiary gland to produce more oxytocin that delivers out the affects to the rest of the body through spinal cord and nervous system which stimulates more positive feedback and loops to producing more oxytocin. This creates a continuous production of oxytocin, that peripherally starts up the production of endorphines, which as we know, have numbing effect, and work in any area in your body.
Production of oxytocin inhibits adrenocrticotropic hormone and cortisol (hormones of stress) constantly triggering relaxation.

As a result women begin to feel better, more uplifted and look for more positive signs in the outside which creates positive feedback which loops back to producing more oxytocin, etc.
Now, knowing this you can decide you want this, so make it your conscious choice. Once you made this choice, it is easy to continue in the positive feedback loop. So enjoy your labor!

Orgasmic Birthing

Not pushing in labor is something unheard of, particularly if you choose to birth in a hospital. Despite the orientation of your provider, and they might be very pro-natural birth, pushing is something that is "naturally" associated with birthing. Or is it?

What if you make other choices? Let's look at the most pleasant birthing selecting "Orgasmic" birth concept from the same title documentary.

What the orgasmic mother Amber tells us is that at the time of "Uterine activity" she made choices every moment to feel the pleasure of the baby's movement down her birth path, and at the height of this experience, and with the kiss of her husband, the baby just slipped out within that orgasmic release.

Natural Oxytocins - hormones of pleasure, released into the mother's system at the time of labor and birth, so flood the blood flow, that birth becomes the most pleasurable moment of your life.

By choice. So this means you have to make this choice.

Find out how you can have a pleasurable birthing in your HypnoBirthing class.

HypnoBirthing Stories

Here is a HypnoBirthing birth story from one of the moms who was trained in HypnoBirthing techniques with Morrin Bass at New York Awareness Center last year. She wrote this letter to me.

"Hi Morrin,
It's been a while, but I'm finally getting the chance to sit down and write you to let you know about the incredible birth of our son, (name)!  He arrived one week early.  My labor was ten hours from start to finish.  I'm so happy that (husband) and I decided to practice hypnobirthing.  (Husband) was an amazing partner who kept me focused and relaxed.  It was an amazing experience.  Morrin, thank you for teaching us the skills we needed to know ...

Morrin, (husband) took your advice and requested a nurse who was interested in natural birth, and that was the best advice ever. The nurse we got was so supportive and helpful—she was studying to be a midwife, so she was amazed with the hypnobirthing process.  Once we were settled in the room, we plugged in our cd player and blasted the hypnobirthing tapes (as the labor progressed, I had the birthing affirmations on repeat...they gave me so much comfort).

When the doctor arrived, she said I was progressing beautifully, but suggested that I get on my hands and knees since the baby was "sunny-side up" with the back of his head pressing on my spine, so I was having back labor (which explains my aching back the last few weeks of pregnancy).  Being on my hands and knees took the pressure off my back, which made me so much more comfortable and this is how I labored and delivered.  It was such an intense experience, but I wasn't afraid and I wasn't in pain (though I kept thinking, okay, after this surge, I might bring up getting an epidural, but I never did say anything...I didn't need to).

By the time I was ten centimeters dilated, I started breathing down, but I was feeling exhausted, I kept saying, "I'm done. I'm done.  I need this to be over." and I was ready to move things along.  (Husband), the nurse and my doctor stayed with me the whole time, encouraging me and keeping me focused with calm encouragement.  (Husband) and I totally set the tone.  Knowing, and repeating to myself that "my body and my baby know what to do," kept me calm and focused too.

I knew my body was relaxed and not fighting what was happening.... I could feel everything (my pelvis opening), but I wasn't in pain, I was just working so hard.  I felt like I was running a marathon.  ... The nurses and the doctor were so amazed and impressed with the hypnobirthing and that we did it so calmly, without an epidural.  I hope the doctor will take this experience back to her practice and share it with others.

I felt so good after the birth (though we were all exhausted). Thank you again for all your help and support.  I look forward to getting together for a reunion at some point.
All the best.
