How To Have Joyful Labor

Those of you who are interested in a calm and peaceful birth listen up!

The new brain research and discoveries open up a whole new realm of what is possible.

There is a definite correlation between peaceful labor, your brain production of oxytocin and your state of mind.

Your peaceful labor depends on your peaceful state of mind which is caused largely by the amount of the neural hormone calle oxytocin. Oxytocin is produced in the brain triggered by the pleasant sensations, thoughts, affirmations, meditation, relaxation, touch, visual or auditory stimulation and in most cases, just deep breathing, that causes our brain to acquire more oxygen streamlining pleasure trance.

The production of oxytocin depends on the polarization of cells producing oxytocin.
The more oxy-gen we have in our body, the more oxy-tocin is produced.
Then the process goes like this:
The positive stimulation through posture or touch, or deep breathing etc., causes the body cells to become more polarized in the cerebellum that causes them to fire action potential in bursts, signaling to hypothalamus, which signals the pitutiary gland to produce more oxytocin that delivers out the affects to the rest of the body through spinal cord and nervous system which stimulates more positive feedback and loops to producing more oxytocin. This creates a continuous production of oxytocin, that peripherally starts up the production of endorphines, which as we know, have numbing effect, and work in any area in your body.
Production of oxytocin inhibits adrenocrticotropic hormone and cortisol (hormones of stress) constantly triggering relaxation.

As a result women begin to feel better, more uplifted and look for more positive signs in the outside which creates positive feedback which loops back to producing more oxytocin, etc.
Now, knowing this you can decide you want this, so make it your conscious choice. Once you made this choice, it is easy to continue in the positive feedback loop. So enjoy your labor!

Miracle mum brings premature baby son back to life.....

26 / 08 / 2010 - Miracle mum brings premature baby son back to life with two hours of loving cuddles after doctors pronounce him dead

An Australian mother has told how her touch brought her 'dead' baby
 back to life.
Doctors gave tiny Jamie Ogg no chance of survival when he was born
prematurely at 27 weeks weighing just 2lb.
His twin sister Emily had survived but after battling for 20 minutes
to get him to breathe Jamie was declared dead.
He was handed to his mother Kate so she and her partner David could
 grieve and say their goodbyes.

But after two hours of being spoken to, touched cuddled and held by
his mother he miraculously began showing signs of life.
Then after being given breast milk on his mother's finger, he began
 breathing regularly.
Kate, who gave birth after a three-hour labour in March, has spoken
of how vital 'skin-on-skin' care can be for a sick baby, or
'kangaroo touch' as it is known in Australia. 'Skin-on-skin' care is
when the child is laid on the mother.
Normally, premature babies are sent to intensive care and she was
only given her son to hold because he was thought to have died.
Telling how the drama unfolded, she said: 'The doctor asked me after
the birth had we chosen a name for our son.
'I said, "Jamie", and he turned around with my son already wrapped
up and said, "We've lost Jamie, he didn't make it, sorry."
'It was the worse feeling I've ever felt. I unwrapped Jamie from his
 blanket.
'He was very limp. His little arms and legs were just falling down
 away from his body.
'I took my gown off and arranged him on my chest with his head over
my arm and just held him.
'He wasn't moving at all and we just started talking to him. We told
him what his name was and that he had a sister.
'We told him the things we wanted to do with him throughout his life.'
Jamie occasionally gasped for air, which doctors said was a reflex
 action.
She added: 'After just five minutes I felt him move as if he were
startled, then he started gasping more and more regularly.
'I thought, "Oh my God, what's going on?" A short time later he
opened his eyes. It was a miracle.
'I told my mum, who was there, that he was still alive. Then he held
out his hand and grabbed my finger.
'He opened his eyes and moved his head from side to side.'
She said they passed on a message to their doctor insisting Jamie
was showing signs of life, but he sent back a midwife with the reply
that they were just natural reflexes and that there was no possible
way he could still be alive.
Kate then said to her husband, 'What if he lives?'
She added: 'I was like, "We could be the luckiest parents in the
 world".
'I gave Jamie some breast milk on my finger, he took it and started
 regular breathing.
'At that point the doctor came back. He got a stethoscope, listened
to Jamie's chest and just kept shaking his head.
'He said, "I don't believe it, I don't believe it".'

David, speaking to the Australian TV show Today Tonight, said:
'Luckily, I've got a very strong, very smart wife.
'She instinctively did what she did. If she hadn't have done that,  then Jamie probably wouldn't be here.'
The doctor who delivered Jamie refused to be interviewed for the TV
 show.

Smiling During Labor?

People ask when I work with clients, how do i notice the changes that occur in a pregnant mom, when she is ready for the birth of her baby.

Most moms are unaware how important their thoughts are in every moment of their life, and particularly in labor.

Most of the time I notice this slight change in her attitude, her behavior, her demeanor. When she begins her thinking from fear position, and continues into the questions and doubts, her face reflects that pain. She says that she wants to avoid the pain, but in fact, she behaves on the opposite.

Fear is natural and healthy when it allows a natural effective mechanism for normal survival. In labor time to be in fear is opposite to being effective.

Educating herself to know what happens during labor is important because it eliminates fear. Knowing the facts is power. Being empowered by knowledge gives the woman strength needed to complete laboring.

Showing the posture, position, breathing of the woman who is in peace and ready for the birth, she begins her labor and moves and breathes in a way that is relaxed and peaceful.

When she begins with a question: What do I want for this birth? the answer begins to emerge to show her what is possible.

Immediately, the possibilities are endless. She can begin to create her own peaceful world and move in it with an attitude that reflects her belief, that is emerged from her value system:

I am mother
My body knows what to do
My baby knows what to do
I trust my body

Affirming what she wants (as opposed to affirming what she does not want, what moms usually do unknowingly) she begins to sort for the signs in the environment confirming what begins to happen toward the birth that she wants.

She recognizes those signs and acknowledges them with a smile.

The baby reflectively moved down the birthing path in her womb, out of her womb, and out into the world, being healthy and feeling loved. And all the while she continues to smile.

A Study of Hypnotizability in Pregnant Women

I reprint this article synopsis for your information:

As study was done to prove that hypnosis is effective for pregnant women.

The participation in the study showed that pregnant women are more "hypnotizable" then
non-pregnant......good news?

Hypnosis during pregnancy and childbirth has been shown to reduce labor
analgesia use and other medical interventions.

We aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in hypnotizability in pregnant and
non-pregnant women. Study participants had hypnotizability measured by
the Creative Imagination Scale (CIS) in the third trimester of pregnancy
and subsequently between 14 and 28 months postpartum and when not
pregnant.

The 37 participants who completed the study gave birth in the
largest maternity unit in South Australia between January 2006 and March
2007. CIS scores were increased in women when pregnant (Mean 23.5, SD
6.9) compared to when they were not pregnant (Mean 18.7, SD 6.6),
0.001. The mean effect size was 0.84 suggesting that the hypnotizability
change was both statistically significant and clinically meaningful.

Our study findings support previous evidence showing that women are more
hypnotizable when pregnant than when not pregnant.
